Oct172019: Coming up with Colour Schemes

“Hi Reimina! I love your art and especially your color and linework and how they work together. How do you come up with your color schemes?”

Asked by callacabforme

Thank you so much!! I don’t think I can answer this satisfactorily because the way I colour is intuitive – I don’t plan*. I just open the colour palette, pick the colour I want, and go from there and see what happens.
*though I’ve an idea/mood I want to achieve in mind.

The only advice I can offer that is tangentially related is to watch and read a lot of media with beautiful palettes. I like period movies (the Jane Austen films, the latest David Copperfield one…) and Wes Anderson films for this reason.
