Oct082016: Character to Story

“How do you convert simple character designs and ocs into actual stories with plot and backstories? I find I make a character or two and I want to do more with the two of them and don’t know where to look first..”

The only thing I can really say is that: just do it. You can’t know a character until you spend time with them. It doesn’t even have to be a big thing first; you can figure out/learn simple things like their favourite food, their phobias, their favourite memes and how they would react to certain things, what songs you associate them with etc. You know, just like small talk with a new friend.

And the next step will be to ask, what makes them that way? There are tons of questions to have fun answering here. For example, why do they like sweets? Is it a childhood memory? And how does their fondness of sweets colour their interactions with their food and with other people. Which segues into the even bigger question: how do they interact with other ocs, if they share the same universe? Then you ask why they choose to interact that way. And soon enough you will have a story, based on your characters.

Anyway take your time. I personally never try to force out characters; I let them reveal themselves to me over time. All of the main characters in my story, The World in Deeper Inspection, has had at least 4 years with me.
Also good to remember that even if a BIG ACTUAL SERIOUS PLOT doesn’t come out, the most important thing is that you’ve fun with your ocs, and you love them. Like your children.
