Nov272017: Personal Connection to Turkiye

“Hey! I’m super interested in The Capret Merchant of Konstantiniyya. I am a Turkish-American deeply entrenched in Ottoman and post-imperial history and a guilty penchant for gothic folklore. Your story is so far up my alley, it might as well be the pavement. Are you Turkish; do you have a personal connection to this setting? I rarely find Turkish media, written by a Turk or not, that is so interesting, i.e. I am tired of dynastic glorification and dully meandering love stories.”

Hey there! Haha, it’s so cool that your interests intersect with the #content of The Carpet Merchant. Vol I is more a slice-of-life historical romance set in the Ottoman era, whereas the next volume (which I’m working on now) is a clapback at Gothic fictions (particularly early vampire literature) and its relationship with Romantic Orientalism. The two volumes inform each other, and I’m excited to finish writing the whole thing!

I’m not Turkish! The most of a connection I have is an appreciation for Istanbul’s 3000 year old history (like come on, it was the meeting place of the East and West, populated by diverse peoples across 4 empires. As a history geek for art, religion and culture, this city is lit). The main character, Zeynel, already came to me as Turkish almost a decade ago, and that was my starting point. Plus I always preferred reading/writing about ordinary people over royalty or royal-adjacent individuals, so that’s probably where the interesting part comes from; there aren’t enough stories about mundane life, or about mature relationships, regardless of context.

Anyway I’d rather let it be up to you and other Turkish and/or Muslim people, whether local or diaspora, to judge for yourselves if TCM is (at the very least) ok. I’m interested to hear your thoughts too if you do read it; I’d love to geek out together over our shared interests and discuss the stuff we’ve picked up from our academic journeys.
