Nov112017: iPad

“I was looking into getting an iPad Pro for drawing purposes. You got any pros and cons about what it’s like to draw on an ipad? Any particularly favorite drawing apps you use?”

I haven’t really used the iPad for drawing until Clip Studio Paint came out; I was mostly using it for uni, i.e doing notes and being able to read (not just read, highlight! screenshot! add notes!) journal articles without having to print 5000 pages. And that will be its main purpose still. It’s so good when you’re so thirsty for books and research like I am but don’t want to use up so many trees.

But anyway you wanted to know about drawing. I tried out most of the legit drawing apps in the store, but the ones most of the industry uses are Procreate and Medibang Paint. They are pretty good apps, and they make awesome work (look at kidchan, choodraws and strangelykatie’s work) but I’m a picky artist and never found my groove with it.

Clip Studio Paint, which I got 2 days ago, changed the whole game. I did a full illustration yesterday on it and ACTUALLY liked it; something that wouldn’t happen with anything else.

I can’t really talk about the pros and cons about drawing on the ipad as 95% of my use is non-drawing. The glass can be too smooth so you may need to get a glove for it (I haven’t, I am fine). Clip Studio is subscription based (6 months free trial now tho), which is, wow, thanks capitalism. Same with Photoshop CC.

Honestly I think the iPad is worth it if you can find uses for it beyond drawing. It’s definitely cheaper and more portable than a cintiq.
