July2018: TCM Questions and Praise (Spoiler)

Some asks following the conclusion of The Carpet Merchant Vol II.

“I discovered Carpet Merchant yesterday, binge-read Vol. 1, cried, binge-read the rest of your webcomics, and must conclude: you are an incredible artist and storyteller and I’m so thrilled to live in a world where you produce such incredible work. Never stop drawing <3”

AAAAAA thank you!! This is one of the sweetest things anyone has ever said. Thanks so much for reading my comics – I promise you there will be more to come!

“thank you so much for the carpet merchant. it was a beautiful journey and I’m forever grateful you showed it to us all.”

THANKKK YOUUU I am so happy to have taken that leap to making it. It really isn’t possible without the support of everyone who has read and shared it, and the scholars and historians who inspired it. ;___;

Onwards to the next story!

“Spoilers I guess: So Mora was put to rest? Can Zey do that to himself to be with his wife, or are there rules?”

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS FOR THE CARPET MERCHANT (ALSO TRIGGER WARNING FOR DEATH/SUICIDE/DEPRESSION MENTION)

Oh anon how I wished you weren’t anon so I could reply to you privately. But this is the card I’m given.

In Vol I, when Ayse asked Zey to turn her into a vampire, he told her that only God (and not Zey) has the right to grant her death. The same logic applies to Zey. It’s consistent with his belief (and his faith), that he shouldn’t off himself, if he can help it. Cos again, in Islam, there is this concept of Qadar – which is a complex philosophical idea that I can’t do justice in few words – that God knows and wills everything that is meant to happen etc etc. So if Zey takes his end in his own hands he would feel that he is going against God’s will, you know? Plus he believes that his entire situation is a divine test, referring to Vol I Book 2.

So Zey really has to trust in God that in the future, somehow, that God will say ‘cool, cool this test is over, my boy, you deserve to rest and be with your true love and family’. If and when that time comes, he will be ready.

Worldbuilding note: in my comic vampires can die by either complete or gradual physical destruction (like immolation), or the draining of their entire life, as we’ve seen Mora done to other vampires and attempt to do with Zey.

“How old was Mora when he was killed? He looks so young in his backstory flashback!”

KINDA SPOILER FOR THE CARPET MERCHANT

He was around 17-18. All this time he was an angsty angry teen.
