Jan252018: Gothic Fiction

“For the gothic genre thing, I’d recommend Neil Gaiman’s short story Forbidden Brides – it’s a parody of the gothic that’s super clever and funny. If you haven’t read The Graveyard Book (also by Gaiman) I highly recommend that too – a brilliant and beautiful modern-day gothic coming-of-age adventure (the edition with the Chris Riddell illustrations is the best) 😊”

Neil Gaiman is my first introduction to Gothic literature! Thanks for bringing up Forbidden Brides – I read all of his short stories when I was a teen, but without the insight now (maybe I should just reread the whole collection).

Also (eyes emoji) on The Graveyard Book. You know when you first read/watched something years ago and it starts a kind of mental-aesthetic explosion that makes you the person/artist you are now? That book is that for me. I always loved the aesthetic of monsters/ghosts/graveyards/victorian history etc, but never thought I could turn all these seemingly disparate interests into a single, functional narrative, until I read TGB. My webcomic The World in Deeper Inspection could never exist without it.

#look I can go on about the graveyard book

#I did tons of analysis

#but the fandom is ?? kinda dead haha
