Jan092023: Artist Asks

A compilation of questions and answers from an Artist Ask meme

Fav character who’s annoying

Luckily I don’t have anyone I find difficult or annoying to draw!

Fav subject that causes me suffering and misery to draw

My historical comics lol. All this ornamentation and decoration and material culture research more often than not drives me down to bonkers town (positive)

A medium of art you don’t work in but appreciate

Theatre (book, music, production design) and songcraft

Any favorite motifs

I wouldn’t say it’s a favourite motif, but “looking at oneself on a reflective surface” has been emerging quite often in my recent works lol

Something everyone else finds hard to draw but you enjoy

Horses, and decorative flourishes in my historical comics.

Something your art has been compared to that you were NOT inspired by

It’s been ages since I last got a comment like this. The last one compared my style to Samurai Jack?

What are your file name conventions

I am Normal and title my files with their names (comics have a Chapter_Spread_Page format, illustrations/scripts have titles). Sometimes it backfires on me when I forget the name, especially if I break the convention and name a throwaway piece as ‘HAHAWHATEVER”

Media you love, but doesn’t inspire you artistically

Music?? I enjoy listening to music while I work and creating playlists for graphic novel projects, but they seem more like mood setters or stabilisers rather than something that directly inspires ideas.

Reimena Yee is a graphic novelist, artist and flamingo enthusiast.

She writes and illustrates quite a few webcomics and graphic novels. When not making books, she lulls away her time with essays on craft, life and experiences in the publishing industry. Some of her thoughts of art and life are rather unstructured and will evolve over time as this blog matures, as they should be.

Currently committed to being Alexander the Great's death doula. Is a nerd for all things spooky and historical.
