Jan012018: Origin Story

“How did you first get into drawing comics?”

I started as an aspiring newspaper comics strip artist, so Garfield, Peanuts, Zits, Brenda Starr, Calvin & Hobbes…those kinds of things. Then Archies Digest (mostly Jughead) and WITCH. As a kid I didn’t think of comics as anything else beyond gags with an ensemble cast, but I had two projects: callupish, and a comic series in The Neopian Times – both are the best examples of how my thinking with comics evolved.

The one webcomic that changed the game for me was Hanna is Not a Boy’s Name by Tessa Stone. If y’all have never seen it before, it’s a mindblowing experience (especially to a 13 year old) of layouts and inventive visual storytelling. I finally made the connection between the kind of prose I loved and wrote, and turning them into comics. Bla bla bla years later I give to you The World in Deeper Inspection, and The Carpet Merchant of Konstantiniyya.

It’s a funny kind of journey, defined by two comics: newspaper strips, and Hanna is Not a Boy’s Name. I can’t imagine the alt scenario when I would have continued my old dream of building a Garfield-esque IP empire, but so glad I didn’t.
