Dec172016: Zeynel Covering His Head

“I notice only Zeynel covers his hair, not Aziz, is this a cultural thing or does he have another reason?”

They come from the same culture so it’s not that. In the Ottoman era headwear was compulsory in public – it’s just part of the clothing laws they had back then (source). It’s like how the Victorians insist on a gentleman wearing a hat when he goes out.

It’s simply…look, if you ask Zeynel why, he would (quietly, out of embarrassment, after a few moments of hesitation) admit it’s because of his balding. He feels more comfortable presenting himself with something on his head, unless it’s around family or close friends. It’s definitely more stylish than a toupee (sorry), and anyway, in the future he turns it into a trademark look, so he will have a fantastic wardrobe of scarves of varying designs and colours, and a beanie collection.

Also I draw Zeynel more than Aziz (WAY more, like 200 pages of comics worth) so I haven’t had opportunity to draw Aziz in the classic sarik, or the white skull cap, or whatever.
